@Karen Dickinson, When the tempo goes up, consistent fingering actually becomes more important, not less. Here’s a simple approach:
Pick one fingering and stick to it for each scale every time you play it. No “custom” changes.
Practice slowly, hands separate, and focus on which finger plays which note (even quietly saying the numbers can help).
Use small chunks (3–4 notes at a time), loop them until they feel easy, then connect the chunks.
Add the metronome later: once you can play a scale 5–10 times in a row with no fingering mistakes, then start increasing the tempo in small steps.
